SKWALA LOUNGE - FLY BOX OCD LIKE ME
What's in your reading stack this week?
If you've need a little Rolf Nylinder fix in your life, he has several new short films up on his channel. Here's one to take in today and I'll share the others soon.

This post has been sitting the in the hopper for a bit as Tyler Hackett of Wandering Blue Lines did a stellar job chronicling the poster artwork for the upcoming Lady Red Rendezvous which is a women's only redfish on the fly tournament in Charleston, South Carolina that is supported by Marsh Wear.
Here we go. Scroll down to see the step-by-step and the finished print.

Something that I think is very neat about several of the small shop builders of fiberglass fly rods is that they are never just satisfied with what they are doing and work hard to bring new fly rods to light. This includes new materials, new tapers, new ideas, and just keeps the fiberglass fly rod space fresh.
Recently, Yasuyuki Kabuto of Kabuto Rods announced a new 2-Weight Series which includes the Model 7323 and Model 7923, which are made from a new E-Glass material and I can only imagine how wonderfully they each cast. If I was choosing, the slower 7'9" 2-weight would be my choice (in dark yellow or brown color blank).
I asked Yasuyuki if he'd share some more information on this new series and he did so along with more that is certainly worth your reading. Scroll down and enjoy.
Yasuyuki wrote... "Since our establishment in 2010, we have been using E-Glass material for the blank's material. However, the production of this pre-preg sheets has been discontinued, resulting in the inability to manufacture several models (blanks).
Among them, we received many requests for a 2-weight rod, but we have been unable to find a satisfactory pre-preg sheet. Regardless of length or line weight, my blanks have received positive feedback for their smooth action.
This is not only my preference but also a sentiment shared by many. I believe that rods that stop their action in the midsection, even with tip action blanks, are not preferred. I personally prefer the feeling of the blank smoothly bending all the way to the grip with the load, and I believe that is the desired action people seek in fiberglass rods.
In fact, since 2010, we have sold and received great reviews for a significant number of finished rods and blanks. Users from approximately 60 countries, including the United States, have enjoyed my rods, and many have become repeat customers. The gratitude towards these users is what motivates me.
Therefore, I couldn't design alternative models with temporary materials as a stopgap solution. I believed that the new models should deliver the same feel as the previous Kabuto Rods' actions.
When designing my blanks, the taper is certainly important, but so is the thickness of the pre-preg used, considering factors such as the number of wraps around the mandrel, the material of the ferrule, and the length of the intrusion.
Fortunately, the pre-preg we used for the limited edition 733L model (7'3" 3-weight/3 pieces) in 2023 fulfilled all of my requirements, allowing us to proceed with the design of the highly requested 2-weight models. Additionally, the increased time I have for rod production due to my two daughters growing up.
I haven't shared many personal stories so far, but I am a single father raising two daughters. You can imagine the challenges of continuing rod production while raising young children on my own. However, thanks to the support of many people, I have come this far. But don't worry, they are now 18 and 14 years old, so they require less attention.
I will be able to continue production at a faster pace from now on.
The new 2-weight models are both 3-piece rods, with options of 7'3" and 7'9" lengths. The action is medium to medium-slow, with the 7'9" model being slower. While some users prefer heavier line weights for certain models, I recommend using a 2-weight line for the new models. Thanks to the rod action, it is also suitable for handling long leaders.
Due to the production of bamboo and other models, we have plans to produce approximately 10 of these new 2-weight models in 2023. We have already received orders for several of them, so if you wish to use them from 2024 onward, please place your order early. Like other models, blanks colors are also available for your selection.
Finally, I sincerely thank all users, colleagues who have supported me, and suppliers and you Cameron."

It's been awhile since I've run a "6 Cool Things" post and the timing is appropriate since everything on this list would be something special or needed for a father in your life. Or yourself. Or if you're a dad who's getting another (damn) tie or socks, treat yourself. You deserve it.
This might be the last of the maybe not even intentional several part series
on streamers within the always educational "Tom's Tips" series from
Orvis. You can watch those
HERE,
HERE, and
HERE.
In this episode, Tom Rosenbauer talks about dead drifting a
streamer which I'll admit that I haven't done much of but will have to try
sometime.

For awhile now, Zac Sexton and his team at OCR Fly Reels have been working on a design and fine tuning the final product for a handcrafted semi-automatic fly reel that they are making in Wyoming. This was no small feat and the Bighorn Semi-Automatic Fly Reel has perked my interest for sure.
To kick things off, OCR Fly Reels has a giveaway going where one lucky angler will win a Bighorn Fly Reel. It's easy to enter and submissions are being taken for the next month.
A couple of months ago JD Berry of Hellbender Nets and I started trading emails which then led to me asking if he would chronicle a bamboo net build from green bamboo to a flamed and finished net.
He obliged and took step by step photographs as the build came together which will be shared in the post below along with his story on what got him started in his craft.
Fortunately for me, the bamboo net you see in this post is sitting beside my desk and it's already been on the water a few times with me too. JD's work is just wonderful and his nets are special.
Be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post for a T.F.M. discount code so you can get a net of your own for a limited time.
JD Berry wrote... "Bamboo is an awesome material to work with. Strong but flexible. Dense but lightweight. It grows abundantly where we live, in fact it's hard to drive for five miles in any direction without seeing a stand. Multiple varieties. Not all are suited for net building, some are too weak, but are great for projects like trellising beans and cucumbers in the garden.
I had been making random things from bamboo and learning different skills along the way. Several years ago a buddy showed me his new carbon fiber net. It was the first time I had seen a rubber net bag and I loved how easy it was to get the fly back. In fact I had stopped using a net altogether because of the frustration of removing a hook from a nylon bag. Handling that new net caused a classic "aha" moment.
I wondered if someone was already making landing nets from bamboo, but after a pretty thorough search I came up empty wondered why. Was it possible? Was there something I was missing? So I made a prototype, used it, then came home and tweaked it a little. And that's pretty much the same net you see today. The design simply worked. I fished that net for a couple of years and along the way made maybe a half dozen more as gifts for friends and family. Fast forward a couple of years and we've now sold nets to anglers in 40 states and Canada, many of them repeat customers. I know it sounds cliche but we truly couldn't do this without the support of our fans.
Ultimately we want our customers to have the opportunity to fish with a net that is matched to their specific needs. We offer four different hoop sizes. Each can be ordered with with a standard hoop shape or a wide mouth. They can be flamed to either a traditional finish, which is a golden look that pairs well with a bamboo rod or a darker flameburst finish which is totally unique. In fact, every net is as unique as a fingerprint. They can be fitted with either a black or clear net bag. Handle length is up to the customer. I've made nets with handles as short as 5" and as long as 48". Shorter handles lend themselves well to hanging from a wading belt or pack/vest while longer handles are more easily stuffed into net holders or tucked behind a sling pack. The 48" handle was requested by a gentleman who was recovering from back surgery and had a hard time bending down to net the fish. The extra long handle helped him stay on the river where he wanted to be."
