Rick and Dave of Xdzines (the peeps who have printed all of the T.F.M. t-shirts) spent a few days on the Pere Marquette River in Michigan ripping streamers and came back with this report...
Every year my buddy and I pack up the truck, load the raft, and head up to Michigan to be "trout bums" for the week. Our minds are on trout and trout alone. We like throwing big streamers for big trout. That means we throw seven and eight weights with 250 and 300 grains sink tips only. No nymphing and we will only throw a dry if it's absolutely worth it. This means that the fishing is either really great or really horrible. Michigan isn't for the faint of heart when it comes to throwing streamers. You're not going to catch a fish every other cast. In fact you might not catch a fish for hours at a time.
For the last two years we have timed it just right and the day we leave it starts to rain. Rain is a good thing for the streamer addict. The river gets dirty and the fish are less spooky. This week was going to be good. The first day was cold, rainy and windy. PERFECT. We turned a few fish and hooked into one nice eighteen inch brown. A good start to the week.
We hooked up with my good friend and guide Jeff Hubbard of Outfitters North. He knows the rivers of Michigan and loves hucking streamers. The next few days proved to be some of the best streamer fishing we have ever had in Michigan. We caught several fish all ranging from twelve to twenty inches. Michigan in May is the place to be!
