A Long Weekend Away

Last weekend started for me on Thursday morning with a drive up to the Pisgah National Forest to secure a campsite for the weekend, set up our large dome tent, and then spent the afternoon on the Davidson River picking off a dozen or so fish on midges before dark.  I capped off the night by meeting Christian Fitchel of The Tailing Loop and his girlfriend for dinner in Asheville.  A most excellent day.

Kevin McGuire of Playful Plans met me on Friday morning and we spent the day on various sections of the Davidson River, catching a few trout, and then enjoyed a full hour or so lounging at the vehicles enjoying a hearty spread of venison tenderloin on hard bread, homemade vegetable beef soup, and a couple brews. We ate good and catching trout seemed secondary to catching up.

Friday afternoon through Sunday was spent with the family and friends from church camping, hiking, sitting around the fire, and eating good.  We spent the better part of Saturday afternoon hiking along Avery Creek to Twin Falls which was quite an adventure for the children and a good way to wear them out.  Saturday night cooled down a bit more than Friday night and sitting around the fire felt mighty fine.  Sunday morning we grudgingly broke camp and headed back home to South Carolina.

A fine weekend indeed enjoying the grandeur of autumn.
