Weekend Giveaway - The Orvis Guide To Fly Fishing For Carp

If you think about it, there is likely no other fish that has pushed fly fishing through the trout ceiling more than the carp in recent years.  If you think back to just ten years ago to articles and advertising in fly fishing magazines and it was overly trout-centric, with maybe a warmwater or saltwater mention here or there.  Now there is a whole culture surrounding fly fishing for carp and the recently released Orvis Guide To Fly Fishing For Carp may be the bible that helps spread this gospel even further.

This book, which was written by Kirk Deeter, explores fly fishing for carp from a lot of different angles and covers where they live, behavior, what they eat, how to fly fish for them, and the book wraps up with noted carp fiends giving their advise for these super selective fly eating fish.

What I like about this book is that it really gives a solid overview on the basics and into the intermediate methods of fly fishing for carp.  Kirk Deeter didn't just rely on his own experience and scattered throughout this book are QR codes which are linked to noted experts in carp angling for further reading.

Though I am still a grasshopper of sorts to the carp game, I don't think there is any fish that has pushed me to improve my casting and presentation, along with readying me for other fly fishing situations (like redfish) more than carp.  They are a very worthy fish to pursue with a fly and likely the only fish in your neighborhood that will take you to your backing.  You'd like to see your backing, wouldn't you?

As a side note, sharp eyes that read this book may notice that I was able to sneak a few photographs into the pages of this book and it was really an honor to be included in this project.

Okay...let's give a couple copies of this book away to the T.F.M. readership.  Stonefly Press graciously sent two copies of The Orvis Guide To Fly Fishing For Carp and I appreciate the support.

I have been looking to get into carping for some time now. I live in Ann Arbor, and the guys at Schultz' Outfitters are always posting pics of Huron River Carp. Does the Orvis Guide to Carp have patterns in it?

Thanks,

John

John...if you paid a visit to Schulty's place I bet they'd give you some specific ideas on flies to tie and use for those local carp.
