Sunset Red Fiberglass Fly Rod Kits

The winter season finds many of us inside working on projects of all sorts and for those looking to build a fiberglass fly rod, Custom Fly Rod Crafters recently began offering two different Sunset Red Fiberglass Fly Rod Kits which retail for $99.00.

These four piece blank kits include all components needed to build a fly rod and are available in 6'7" three weight and 7'8" four weight.

From Custom Fly Rod Crafters...  "Introducing a new affordable fiberglass blank from Custom Fly Rod Crafters. The blanks are a gorgeous "Sunset Red" color and are 4pc sleeve over ferrule design (tip over butt). The blanks are very light and smooth with just enough crisp power to lay out a nice line. Two models are available: 6'7" 3wt and 7'8" 4wt and we recommend a light trout fly line such as the Rio 'InTouch' Trout LT WF. The 3wt line is 128gr and the 4wt line is 146gr. both are perfect for dries and soft hackles. Each Sunset Red blank comes with a free cloth rod sock and we offer a special priced aluminum tube option for only $19.99."

Check out the Custom Fly Rod Crafters website for more information or to place an order.  These ready to build kits are available in limited numbers.

After much debate, I decided to order one of these kits. Went with the 4 weight. Having never built a rod, or cast a fiberglass rod, I figure this will be a decent introduction for me. I can't find much info about the blanks, so I'm just hoping I end up with a nice small stream trout and maybe bluegill rod.

Lucas...let me know how the build goes and what you think of the fly rod when you are finished.

Will do. I'm impressed with the components so far: guides come already ground; grip feels well in hand; the uplocking reel seat fits together nicely. For the price I was actually expecting less in the way of fit and finish than what I received. Pleasantly surprised. Hopefully I can do it justice with my assembly work.

Started on the build last saturday. Finished up the rod last monday. All told it took me, a first timer, about 14 hours from start to applying finish. Made a few beginners mistakes, but all in all I'm very happy with the way it turned out for my first build. Lawn cast it yesterday with a Risen wf4f line on an Orvis battenkill barstock. My first thoughts were that it balances nicely with a reel that size, and wow this thing is slow compared to the graphite rods I'm used to. Had no problem laying out 40 to 50' of line in a slight cross breeze. Not to bad for a little 4 weight, considering I'm no where near the worlds best caster. Finally got it out to a stream today, with a redington drift 3/4 that had a wf5f line on it. Casting a #8 beadhead wooly bugger I could definitely tell the rod was overstrung, and had to really concentrate on slowing my casting stroke down. I've relined that reel with a better quality wf4f line and hopefully will get to make some casts later in the week. Water was still high and flowing fast after our flooding last week, and I didn't have much time to fish today so finding out how the rod will handle dry flies, and a fish at the other end of the line will have to wait. So far I'm very pleased with this little rod, and would recommend it to anyone who was looking to build a rod on a budget. I know I'm planning on building another in the near future.

Lucas, glad to hear your thoughts on the rod so far. I too decided to give my first rod build a go with this kit after reading the post but I decided on the 4 piece 3 wt instead. I just finished the build earlier this week and can't wait to give it a go. Unfortunately it may be a while here in NY with the way the weather looks.

Unknown... That's great to hear a review of your experience. I still need to see what they are all about.
