FIRST LOOK - Cabela's C.G.R. Fly Reels

Sometimes, through the course of writing this website, I get a chance to put hands on prototype or new items of fly fishing gear before they are released.  This gives me a chance to put that item through it's paces, see what works and doesn't work, and provide a sneak peek on the website or social media pages from time to time.

Tucked in a recent package of Cabela's C.G.R. fly rods (which will be given away during the 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways) was a reel case which contained a late prototype of the Cabela's C.G.R. click and pawl fly reel which will be released sometime in early 2016.

Here's what I know so far...
  • The CGR fly reels will be available in two sizes of 3/4 and 5/6 weight
  • 3/4 weight - 3" Diameter/5.4 Ounces
  • 5/6 weight - 3.38" Diameter/6.1 Ounces
  • Click and pawl retrieve can be switched from LHW/RHW
  • Made from die cast aluminum
  • The CGR fly reels will be priced at $59.99 each
  • Additional spools will be available for $29.99 each
  • Release date isn't exact but should be late February 2016
  • Made In China

I am excited about these fly reels as they will be a great option for anglers who are looking for an inexpensive click and pawl that will be a perfect match for the C.G.R. fly rods and other three weight through six weight glass rods in the collection.

Look for more information on these as it gets closer to them being released.

Cool, too bad they aren't offering a 7/8 model.

Nice. Great price point too. Should make a great match for those rods.

Thanks, Cameron, for sharing this. If everything goes as expected with these reels, they can count on me for one of each size. This is exciting news and what I have been looking for budget minded wise.

Very timely! I just picked up a 3wt CGR rod and have been trying to decide on a reel. This might fit the bill. Do you know how heavy the 3/4 is?

Nevermind, I see the weight listed now, don't know how I missed that :)

They remind me of the Leeda Dragonfly reel from England circa 1990's

Looks VERY much like the old Cortland Crown II reel that was sold back in the early-to-mid 80's.
