This past weekend my friend Mike Boward of Big Dry Fly flew in on Friday evening since he has a class in Bluffton this week and since we had a full day Saturday together, I figured that it would be a good idea to run down to Charleston for the day. We mapped out our day over dinner at Keg Cowboy in Lexington which, along with top shelf brews, has what's becoming known as a solid kitchen as well.
Here's the one through four ways to show a friend a good time in the Lowcountry.
1. START THE DAY WITH A GOOD MEAL
We didn't get of the house all that early and arrived in Charleston just as Leon's Oyster Shop was opening their doors for the day. We walked in, found a seat at the bar, and enjoyed a perfect lunch. Leon's is easily on my top five eats in Charleston and does not disappoint. Fried chicken, fry up, the sides, and drinks list are all tops.
2. STOP IN AT THE LOWCOUNTRY FLY SHOP
No trip to Charleston is complete without a stop at Lowcountry Fly Shop to check in with the boys, see what's new in the shop, and on this trip we both picked up a new favorite ball cap with the restyled LFS logo.
3. SPEND THE AFTERNOON WITH CAPTAIN SCOTTY DAVIS
I caught my first redfish on a dawn patrol a few years ago with Captain Scotty Davis of Lowcountry Fly Shop and I figured he'd be perfect to hopefully put Mike on his first redfish as well. Lightening can strike twice, eh?
We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day with temperatures in the high 60's, a bit of wind, and good vibes in the skiff. Captain Scotty Davis has a great guide style that keeps everything chill but still pointed towards spotting fish and talking the fellow on the bow into the right presentation.
Mike and I took turns at the bow and as afternoon edged into evening, Mike made a cast towards an exposed point covered in oysters and soon felt the tug of a redfish taking the fly. Moments later he had a smile on his face and his first redfish in his hands.
4. DON'T GO HOME HUNGRY
We were off the water near dark and began the trek home but not before stopping in at Boxcar Betty's for dinner. This quick in and out restaurant has become a family favorite with tasty sandwiches and just as tasty sides.
As with any trip to the Lowcountry, there's a right way to do it. I think we did that way for sure.
Coming to Charleston sometime soon? Plan a day on the water with Captain Scotty Davis or any of the guide staff at Lowcountry Fly Shop.
