Rep Your Water Nears Goal of Donating $250K to Conservation

It's not often that I share industry news releases on T.F.M. but it's also not often that a small shop (and growing) apparel company within the outdoors space approaches anywhere near the level of giving to conservation that Garrison and Corinne of Rep Your Water have done.

Take a moment to read the presser below...

Erie, CO (February 5, 2020) – Rep Your Water made giving back to conservation part of its DNA since their inception in 2011 and currently donate a minimum of 3% of all sales to their 19 nonprofit conservation partners such as local chapters of Trout Unlimited, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust and Wild Steelhead Coalition. In 2019 alone Rep Your Water donated $55,874 bringing their lifetime total to $237K.

It’s safe to say that Rep Your Water will achieve their goal of donating $250K to conservation by the end of 2020 and Rep Your Water Co-Founder, Corinne Doctor had this to say about their effort to support conservation, “We believe that giving back to nonprofit conservation organizations is simply the right thing to do because ultimately we want to protect what we love and our conservation partners are the ones with their boots on the ground fighting to protect and save wild and native fish, public lands and places like the Everglades, for example. But we have our customers to thank because they are the ones who are equally, if not more, passionate about these important conservation issues, so they have an opportunity to protect what they love and supporting us, so it’s really a win-win-win scenario for Rep Your Water, conservation and our customers!”

Rep Your Water has also recently released a collection of products that go a step further than giving back to conservation by also improving the social and environmental performance of their products called the “Ethical Assortment”, which includes, among other products, new flannels that are ethically sourced and made from organic cotton. Additionally, Rep Your Water has gone zero-waste to landfill and purchased Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for 100% of their headquarters purchased electricity, so they are not only giving back to conservation, but their operations and products are also exemplifying their beliefs as individuals and as a brand and this also positively resonates with their customers. Stay tuned as Rep Your Water will be releasing their third annual Sustainability Report in the coming months and help Rep Your Water crush their goals of $250K by 12/31/20 by supporting a brand that measures their success not by how much they can make, but by how much they can give back.

Flirting with the Marsh

Maybe your grade school years were a little different than mine but do you remember kinda liking that girl who sat in front of you in class but she'd have nothing to do with you?  You'd try to pass a note, maybe get up the confidence to say something nice or put a flower on her desk after recess.  Nothing.  No response.  Or more likely, she'd ask to be moved to another desk.  This was crushing on my young emotions for sure.

My relationship with the Louisiana marsh for a number of years has felt much the same.  I like the place.  Actually quite a bit.  The people, food, the music, the history, the unfamiliar and of course the possibilities of finding full figure bull redfish moving through the marsh.

All that flirting has usually been met with endless gray sheets of clouds, wind and at times day long impossible gales and shallow water that one of the guy's on this year's trip likened to "fishing in Yoo-hoo", which was kinda spot on.

This trip was different however.  The insistent flirting just might be paying off.  Or maybe there is a benefit of coming into this with low expectations and be surprised.  Either way, something was definitely different.  We had better conditions, found a lot of redfish and black drum tailing and rolling in the shallows and of course enjoyed some great hospitality staying at Lylte Farms.

Though they don't talk much about being down there, Captain Kevin Morlock of Indigo Guide Service and Captain Steve Martinez of STM Outfitters have been figuring out some new places to show their Michigan clients to and our rag tag crew which included Mike Sepelak, Dave Fason and David Moore of Rent This Rod were all glad that the weather on this trip allowed us to get on the water three of the four days.  We weren't numbers counting but we might have caught as many (or more?) fish on flies as we did on spinning rods.  I call that a win win.  No doubt, we found some large ones.

Gray days make black and white photographs feel right for this post and I admittedly didn't take enough photographs at all.  These were all from my iPhone as it was easier to snap something here and there and continue fishing.  I guess when the flirting looked like it was working, I wanted to keep the pressure on with a fly or spinning rod in my hand instead of my Nikon.

The boys have gone home from Louisiana but if you're thinking about steelhead, salmon or ready for the Beaver Island experience, give Captain Kevin Morlock and Captain Steve Martinez a shout.  It's never too early to get your name on the calendar.

I'll circle back soon with a gear review wrap up of what worked on this trip.

TIM JOHNSON GALLERY - Step By Step Brown Trout Watercolor

Last weekend I found Tim Johnson at the Southwest Wildlife Exposition in one of three different Orvis spaces spread out over the event.  As we walked up, he was working on a Timmy Grips and we talked about the many hundred grips that he had done last year for a  limited edition series of Helios fly rods in both freshwater and saltwater models.  There are largely gone though you might find one still at your local shop.

Tim had also recently finished a brown trout watercolor and I asked if he'd pass along the step by step photographs to share in this T.F.M. post.  I always get a kick out of seeing how things come together and appreciate the process of pencil to paint.

The original is already sold and he was down to the last few prints too.  If you're interested in one (not saying there are any left) then you might want to reach out to him today.

Check out the Tim Johnson Gallery website and follow along with the latest studio news on Facebook and Instagram

River Therapy

I learned how to fly fish on this river in the early 1990's and this short film rings so true. I can't get those sweet tea colored waters out of my bones and would never want to.

This looks like the first of several films by Ausable River Outfitters on why anglers are drawn to this iconic river and I'm looking forward to future releases.

PAKMULE - Built for the Adventure Ahead

This past week my son and I attended the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition for the day and one of the highlights was meeting Kansas Sartin of PAKMULE.  He's making a great product that is completely changing expectations of what a hitch basket should be and we've been beyond impressed with our PAKMULE and PAKMULE Ridgeline carriers.  It's completely changed how we travel, organize and access our gear, coolers and luggage when on the road but even day to day as well.

Visit the PAKMULE website for more information and look for some additional products being added to the mix soon.  Follow along on Facebook and Instagram for the latest news.

SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE FLY - Issue 34

The latest issue from the boys of Southern Culture on the Fly went live and I wonder if I'm too old for a "Rumspringa" as a mostly responsible most of the time 45 year old?

CHECK IT.

GRAYWOLF RODS - Haldin RFT 57 S-Glass Build

If you rewound the tape to when the contemporary fiberglass fly rod push began some dozen or so years ago, most fly rod companies and custom fly rod builders entered the space with the usual offerings.  They checked the boxes with a 7' three weight, 7'6" four weight and a 8' five weight.  Over the years, we've seen the small shop builders and blank makers in particular differentiate themselves with some more unusual offerings.  I like that.  A lot.

I've been keeping an eye on Haldin Fly Rods but somehow missed their 7' five weight blank until Shane Gray of Graywolf Rods offered this build on the Finished Rods page.  A short five weight is a throwback to vintage days and just perfect for small to medium waters, especially with some tree cover, where you have high chances of mixing it up with a fish of decent size.

Someone needs to snatch this one up so it'll stop teasing me...

Check out the Graywolf Rods website for more information on this and a few other finished fly rods and be sure to follow along with the latest shop news on Facebook and Instagram.

Also, you should be tracking on both RFT Gear (Facebook/Instagram) and Haldin Fly Rods (Facebook/Instagram) as they are both popping up on my social feeds more and more frequently with interesting additions.  Hopefully I'll have some experience with a couple of the Haldin Fly Rods soon.

BER FLY RODS - CTS Quartz 7'6" Three Weight Build

I'm sharing the latest build from Paolo Bernabei of Ber Fly Rods for two reasons...

First, this Italian craftsman does amazing work and in this case he built a CTS Quartz 7'6" three weight that is just sharp through and through.  The plexiglass fly rod tube gives it extra credit points too.

Secondly, he featured the Rep Your Water X T.F.M. #glassisnotdead Knit Hat in this first photograph and it's a good reminder that I'm down to just a dozen or so left in stock.  Get one while it's still cold out and keep your noggin "fashionably" warm.

Now back to the build with a few photographs...

Visit the Ber Fly Rods website to see more photographs of this build and many others.  Follow along with the latest shop news on Instagram.

FINE TACKLE - Epic Fastglass Builds

Often times when I see the work of Christian Hörgren of Fine Tackle, I'm thinking "So Fresh, So Clean" and these Swift Fly Fishing Fastglass builds on the Epic 476 and Epic 580 blanks are stellar examples of his focus and talents as a rod builder.

Visit the Fine Tackle website to see and learn more about each of these builds.  As of this writing, both fly rods are for sale and available.

Christian can be contacted through DM on Facebook or Instagram or by email at finetackle@gmail.com.
