NIGEL NUNN - Fly Box Holy Grail & Sketching Through a Pandemic

It was sometime in March of this year when I saw Nigel Nunn's inspired sketch "2020 Fly Box" and reached out to him asking if he'd mind sharing that piece and maybe a few others in a T.F.M. post.  He agreed but said he was pretty busy at the moment and when I circled back on our email conversation the other day, he said that he had a story to tell now that brings even deeper value to this sketch and his others.

Longtime readers should know that I have a real soft spot for artists and Nigel's work is just so fun with a style that slightly cartoons the realisms of a hand-tied fly.  It's great to hear that he's been well through the pandemic, his eyes are working again, and he's back at the vise too with his sketch book nearby.

A little voice inside my head said
"Don’t look back you can never look back...”
Don Henley, The Boys of Summer

Nigel wrote...  "I’ve never really liked to look back on things too much, but when invited to write a few words for The Fiberglass Manifesto about my 2020 fly box, it was unavoidable and perhaps both necessary and healthy to do so, especially as we come to the end of such a year as this. Who really knew as I sent out some boxes of flies to friends, mainly as a series of thank you's and to coincide with a piece I’d written and illustrated for the Spring issue of Fly Culture magazine, that life would change so drastically? I remember getting the last parcels out in the post and receiving my copy of the magazine literally as we went into a lock down that would last months.

I only started fly tying a few years ago. I’ve fly fished pretty much all my life and it was at the suggestion of Bruno Vincent (now of the Wild Trout Trust) that I came to one of his fly tying classes held in a rather dingy top room of a London pub. We sat around the table and were introduced to a world of wax, thread, hooks, fur and feathers that quite made us forget about the scurrying sounds on the floor around us, the questionable beer and even more questionable pork pies, to a world that up to that point most of us had only purchased by the handful out of plastic cabinets. I still remember the first fly I tied, a red buzzer, just a hook and some red thread… that was it, that was enough to show me what was possible. For the next few years I probably spent more time fly tying than I did fishing. In fact I do spend a lot more time fly tying than fishing, not just because of Covid but because I really enjoy it.

Once I’d started tying, and after that amazing moment when you first catch a fish on a fly that you’ve tied yourself, you begin to notice things more… this was rather ironic for me, because as I began to look at insects and hatches more and more, my sight seemed less and less. This, I found out to be cataracts in both eyes, and while I waited for appointments and operations things definitely became more blurry. I started to draw/sketch out flies more than I was actually tying and also to use these sketches as an aide-mémoire for patterns that were finding their way out into the world. I’m forever grateful to friends who act as fly testers for me, often receiving brown envelopes with experimental patterns to try out on various rivers. This has been invaluable to help tweak and refine ideas that otherwise would still only be sketches or a forgotten fly in the corner of a box.

The 2020 fly box was a celebration of all the above. If there’s one thing I think all flyfishers and fly tyers are searching for, it is the holy grail of that one fly box. The fly box that contains all you need, and while I’m still not there yet, as the new season approached these fly boxes had everything that I’d worked on and worked out to date. Little did we know that as soon as they were sent out we wouldn’t be allowed to go fishing. I remember hearing from Zoe Latham that she got out on the last afternoon before lockdown to a small Dartmoor stream and started with pattern 1. The ‘Real’ Emerger and had a rise to the fly. That promise of what was to come kept a lot of us going through the long months of Covid ahead and when we could finally get out to fish again made us appreciate it all the more.

As I write this now, on the 28th of December (with newly fixed eyes!), it doesn’t seem so bad to look back. In fact, overnight I learned of an Australian fly tyer who had seen one of my flies and tied up his own version. The fly was the ‘Real’ Emerger, the first fly of the 2020 box and one that is featured in the photos I sent to Cameron for this article. You can see the sketches and list of materials as well as the fly itself here. Also, some more of my own patterns like the Gypsy Queen, Shaggy Olive and the YPT as well as patterns by other fly tyers that have inspired me (Glen Pointon's Deadly Olive and Phillippa Hake’s Dyret). I hope you enjoy looking at them and maybe they’ll even inspire you to tie up a few… they'll definitely catch fish!

Best wishes, stay safe, tie flies and tight lines.

Nigel Nunn, London, 28/12/20"

NORTH FORK COMPOSITES - Iconoglass Sale Ending VERY Soon...

I mentioned the seriously slashed prices on the North Fork Composites Iconoglass fiberglass fly rod blanks in October with a T.F.M. post and this is your final reminder that these prices are not likely to extend past the New Year.

Looking to build a 4, 5, 8, 10, or 12 weight in glass?  Now's the time to place your order.  Like today or at least by the end of day on Thursday.

Information and stats on the Iconoglass blanks lifted from the North Fork Composite website...

"At NFC we wanted to dispel the notion of what a glass blank should look and feel like. For years, custom rod builders have been asking our design team to give them a glass canvas, one that’s a joy to cast, is lightweight and faster in action compared to traditional E and S glass predecessors. We decided to go a step further and incorporate stunning colors into this series. The name Iconoglass “stuck” as we wanted to challenge the traditional understanding of “glass is boring” or “glass is heavy” or “glass is too slow”. Iconoglass blanks will challenge this notion with every cast.
  • Iconoglass Blanks are S2/Zentron fiber
  • Ferrule Lite Joints (can replace sections without needing to send the original blank)
  • Gloss Raw Finish (in Natural, Cyan, Green, and Gray)
  • Unsanded – sanding a blank makes the action softer, not sanding the blanks makes the fast zentron action even faster"

Check out the North Fork Composites website for more information and consider following along on the latest shop news on Facebook and Instagram.

SAGE FLY FISH - Swing Season - Digging For Steel

I've been thinking a lot lately about swinging flies for everything from our local stripers to steelhead on a faraway river someplace.  Sage is feeding the need with the latest Swing Season story (with stunning imagery) on their website and with this short film as well.  Press PLAY...

It's been awhile since I've messed around with my glass two-handers but I'm thinking one of the Sage SPEY full frame fly reels would be the perfect and classy match.  I'm seriously crushing on one of the 7/8/9's in Stealth colorway.

Check out Swing Season and the Sage website for all your two-hander needs.

FILSON - WINTER SALE

The day after Christmas might mean that you have some holiday money to spend and it's good timing as Filson has kicked off their Winter Sale with savings of at least 50% on selected items.  This sale will run through early February with new items added to the mix along the way so check back.

I've mentioned it before that I have an ongoing affiliate relationship with Filson and purchases made through links in posts like this, or on social media, end up putting a few dollars in the T.F.M. piggy bank.  Thank you for supporting what I do here.

Visit the Filson Winter Sale and get yourself something nice.

Jeff Kennedy on the Retro Fly

The other day, artist Jeff Kennedy posted the Retro Fly template art on his Facebook page that he created years ago while on his Drawing Flies 365 bender.  I thought it would be neat to get take on what inspired it and I don't think either of us anticipated all the different places over the world that the Retro Fly would pop up when he said that I could use the design as a logo for The Fiberglass Manifesto.

I have long appreciated his generosity in being able to use this piece of art over the years and want to say thank you again.

Jeff wrote...  "I am a product of the 60's and 70"s. No internet. No computers. Do not get the wrong impression, I am not a Luddite. Actually quite the opposite. I rely on my computer, 32" Wacom Cintiq Pro drawing display and an iPad with Procreate as drawing tools professionally and for fun. But there was something tactile when I was a draftsman using the non-digital tools of the trade. A plethora of ellipse and circle guides, french curves, Ames lettering guide, triangles, and Kohinoor drawing pens are still some of my favorite go-to tools that reside in my taboret alongside my Mayline drafting board.

The Retro Fly drawing template was born out of my love of traditional drafting tools. If you have ever owned a set of circle or ellipse templates, they have a certain smell. That smell brings back memories of being on the drafting board, eraser shavings, pumice bags, and ink-stained fingers. An experience that engages many senses. I relish the days of shutting down the computer and breaking out the traditional tools and creating. It can lead you down some memorable paths.

When Cam approached me about using the Retro Fly on his T.F.M. signature gear, I was delighted! It has been great to see the fly reproduced on outerwear, buffs, koozies, stickers, and even etched on Abel Nippers. My other favorite application was the Retro Fly SeaDek patch. I have one stuck on the rower's box of my boat. I am always excited to see what application will come up with next!"

Jeff's not updating it anymore but the Drawing Flies 365 website is a neat look back at these many pieces of art.  The Drawing Flies 365 book is still available as well for purchase.

IN THE SEAM - The Fiberglass Fly Rod Market! Is Glass Dead?

The other day, I was able to get on a Zoom call with JP from JP Ross Fly Rods & Co. and we recorded an episode of his podcast, In the Seam

Of course we talked glass but our conversation touched on some places that I really haven't talked about before on the several podcasts that I've been on.  Give it a listen when you get a chance.

You can find the In the Seam podcast on Anchor and from there it will link you to the various podcast listening platforms.

ECHO - Tim Rajeff on Fiberglass Rod Casting Tips

Tim Rajeff of ECHO Fly Fishing has been talking for awhile about creating series of short fly casting with fiberglass fly rod videos and this first one covers grip and how that affects forward acceleration in your cast.

I don't know about you but how Tim teaches these fundamentals really resonates and I'm looking forward to sharing the rest of the series of videos on T.F.M.

Looking for a new fiberglass fly rod?  I like both the River Glass and Bad Ass Glass Quickshot series from ECHO Fly Fishing a lot.

The BAG Quickshot fly rods in eight and ten weight have been on a lot of trips over the past couple of years for everything from smallmouth, tarpon, carp, pike, redfish, snook, permit, and more.  They are incredible workhorses.

The Return of a Christmas Classic... Silver & Gold

There is a short list of classics that make our Christmas with many of the usual favorites of A Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, Elf, Christmas Vacation, and after everyone's asleep on Christmas Eve, It's a Wonderful Life, with a short glass of scotch.

One that has been missing the last couple of years has been Silver & Gold as it stands the test of time as an evergreen holiday classic mash up of 2012 GoPro footage and cuts of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Click play before the lawyers for Yukon Cornelius and Rudolph get it taken down...

A Christmas classic lives on (Thanks, Ivan) at least for a little while.

GRAYWOLF RODS - Steffen Brothers "Milestone Trio" Builds

One of the neat things about writing The Fiberglass Manifesto is that I get to talk to a lot builders that are listed on the Fiberglass Fly Rod Makers page and over the summer, Shane Gray of Graywolf Rods mentioned that he was approaching 1,000 numbered fiberglass rod builds that have come out of his shop over the years.

He went on to talk about trying to make this build even more special by handpicking three favorite Steffen Brothers blanks and creating a set with builds which would be numbered #900, #950, and #1,000 that would be offered as a trio.  We talked about chronicling these builds with a T.F.M. post and maybe rolling it out on both of our websites on the same morning.

Fast forward to 7:30 a.m. (I worked until 3:00 a.m. and was already up) this morning and this post was supposed to be synced with Shane since I was going to offer an added incentive of a T.F.M. swag package if these fly rods were purchased together by the same person.

For those who know Shane won't be surprised but he's impatient and published his post before I could get mine up.  Eight minutes later he texted, "Sold already.  The whole damn set."

So, even though the fanfare is somewhat lost (but really does illustrate perfectly the watchful customer base that he has) I'm running this post as planned with a series of photographs of these builds coming together and a short interview as well.  Oh, and I'm still planning on sending something special to the buyer of these fly rods.

I sent Shane an email yesterday with a few quickie questions and then gave him a call to make sure he was looking them over.  He responded, "Yeah, I saw them but what I really like to do is build rods..."

He's a man of few words who let's his work speak for him which I guess I would too if I had his talent.

I know you've blown past 1,000 builds already (he was working on build 1,015 today) but what does it feel like to reach this milestone as a small shop fly rod builder?

It's a great feeling.  At times it's hard to believe that I've built so many fiberglass rods...yet other times it feel like I've built many more!

What have you learned over the years and how have you seen the landscape change, specifically about fiberglass fly rods?

I've learned a lot by trial and error.  I think that's the best way for me to learn.  Sourcing components is what I find to be my biggest challenge at times.  Well, besides the mailing/shipping issues right now.

What still drives you as a small shop fly rod builder and what does a typical day look like?

Simply put, to survive.  I build rods not only because I love it, but because it supports my family.  This is my income.  I feel blessed to be able to build fly rods for a living.  They say if you do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life.  That's the way I feel and I look forward to my work every day.

A typical day is getting up between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., walking into the shop to prioritize what needs to be done, and then start to build.  Oh yeah, lots and lots of coffee is involved too.  There are several times throughout the day that I stop to answer phone calls, emails, and DM's on Instagram.

I try to end my work day by 6:00 p.m. but that doesn't always happen.  Sometimes there are jobs that you start in the morning and can't go back to until later in the evening.  Being self employed, I hardly ever get time off.  I work every day, Monday through Sunday.  I try to take a few days off once or twice a year to take a road trip with my wife and I try to fit a little fishing in when I can.

What's special about these three fly rod builds with #900, #950, and #1000, why these Steffen Brothers blanks, and who do you hope ends up with them?

First, these are special blanks and the 6' two-weight (two-piece) and 7'3" 2/3 (three-piece) are not as common as the 8' 3/4 weight.  I was able to build on several of the lighter Steffen Brothers blanks this year and I really think they are special.

Speaking of Steffen blanks, all that I've ever built on are superb.  Straight as an arrow.  Wonderful tapers and the amount of time and work in making these is impressive.  If you saw the amount of labor Mark and Tim put into these blanks, it is outstanding.

What does today through "Build #2000" look like?  Are there things you've wanted to do as a builder that you haven't done yet?

Wow, that's a tough one.  The journey to Build 2,000 looks like a lot of work and also a lot of fun.  I have several plans in the works, I would like to continue to offer my Trout Smiths branded rods which I am expanding the line up for this coming season.  I have hope to complete the eight year project of building my new 1,000 square foot workshop and fingers crossed, we have it done by spring.

I would like to begin making my own blanks and that probably will happen in the near future.  I'm glad to have friends that already have the knowledge and are willing to let me shadow and learn from.  Then, of course, once I'm on my own, there will be lots more trial and error!

Any words of wisdom to share?

In short, go fishing.  Oh, and buy yourself a rod that you'll be proud of and then you'll enjoy the experience that much more.  Life is all about balance.  We all have to work but you should like what you do.  No many are able to say that they love their job but you should at least like it.

Rod building is not for someone who's looking to get rich quick.  It takes patience, a steady hand, persistence, and the willingness to put a lot of hours in.  Will you ever build the perfect rod?  Probably not...but you just have to keep trying.  For me, maybe that happens on Build 2,000...

We Love Boats!

The first time I saw RC Cone's work was with Breathe.  That was nine years ago and it's been neat to follow his genius work through the fly fishing and outdoors industry.

His latest is just two minutes of fun and I can't wait to get in the front of a boat with a guide friend calling the shots.  I'm ready to "soak it in..."

MOONLIT FLY FISHING - Lunar S-Glass Sale & More

There are a lot of items on sale right now on the Moonlit Fly Fishing website but the discounted price (which is likely good until the end of the year) on the Lunar S-Glass fly rods might make this line up the steal of the year.  Hobby builders take note, the Lunar S-Glass blanks are on sale as well.

You might want one and maybe someone on your Christmas list needs one as well.

I don't have a lot of experience with the this entire line up but the seven-weight is a lot of fun and I highlighted it as part of "10 for Summer - The Warmwater Edition".  Check it out.

Visit the Moonlit Fly Fishing website to see everything that's on sale and maybe pull the trigger on a Lunar S-Glass (or several).

KABUTO RODS - Limited Edition 10th Anniversary Fly Rod

It doesn't seem possible that Yasuyuki Kabuto of Kabuto Rods has been on the fiberglass scene for ten years now and yet, here we are.

To celebrate this milestone, he is taking orders for a very limited edition 10th Anniversary fly rod that will be built on one of his latest tapers, the 7'9" 3/4 weight in five-pieces.

File this under "Ultimate Trout Weight Pack Fly Rod" which comes complete with a lightweight brown glass rod tube.  And believe me, I fighting every urge not to order one of these myself.

Kabuto Rods has been a quiet force for years and his tapers smashed the idea that Japanese glass were soft full-flexing dry fly only fly rods.  His fly rods are surprisingly powerful and are just wonderful in every way.  I like seeing that this 79345 taper is shown as a split weight of either 3-weight or 4-weight as many have found that his fly rods handle one size fly line up with no issues at all.

Interested in this limited edition 10th Anniversary fly rod?  Send an email to Yasuyuki to discuss the details.

Visit the Kabuto Rods website for more information and follow along with the latest shops news on Facebook and Instagram.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDES GALORE

As it seems to do each year, Christmas and when you need to have your online orders placed for them to make it under the tree, is about here.  If you're doing some last minute shopping, here are a few gift guides that I've enjoyed going through that you might find helpful.

Oh yeah, and there are a few great things in the T.F.M. Store that I can get in the mail early this week as well.  The Vedavoo X T.F.M. items are worth a look and mostly in stock.  T.F.M. decals and a couple Retro Fly Koozies make great stocking stuffers too...

Along with a Gift Guide linked above, Loon Outdoors also produced three short videos that are worth a watch HERE, HERE, and HERE with gift ideas too.
