Skinny Surf Redfish

If things seemed like they slowed down around here this past weekend, it was because we were in Charleston for beach play, family time, and a few hours of fly fishing with Scotty and Bruner from the Lowcountry Fly Shop early yesterday morning.

The tides weren't right for tails in the grass so we motored out to an obscure set of sandbars and cast flies into the surf.  In my mind this is kind of a low probability/high rewards type game and the hard packed sand bars slowly got eaten up with crashing surf over the few hours we were there making long casts into the waves.  A few fish were seen but none took a swipe at our flies.   I had one redfish ride a wave all the way to my feet, turn and slowly swim back into the into the ocean.

Later in the morning we hopped back on the boat and poled around a sand flat finding a small pack of redfish that scattered and then a few bonnethead sharks who were on patrol looking for an easy meal.

All in all a great way to spend Father's Day morning and I can't wait to get back down again.

Glad to know that I'm not the only person who has flailed the suds fruitlessly in SC. Hopefully someday somebody will figure out the secret to success for reds there.

Kevin...I think the secret is just doing it every day that has a positive tide for it. We saw redfish, and they have caught them before doing this, but that day wasn't our day. It was still well worth getting out.
