YAMAME FLY RODS - The Making of the 'The Lightning'
The other day we talked about Nico Vreugdenhil of Yamame Fly Rods and his trip to visit Mike McFarland of McFarland Rod Company this past summer for a week that ultimately brought around the creation of his latest offering, 'The Lightning'. You should read that T.F.M. post if you haven't already.
The Lightning is a 7'7" 4-weight, rolled in E-Glass and described as a "progressive and quick taper".
Read that last sentence again as typically the words "E-Glass" and "Quick" are
not used together but Mike is a magician and I've seen him do this before.
Nico wrote... "A progressive and quick taper in E-Glass, 'The Lightning' is very light in the hand. It's accurate and smooth casting. It does his job also in windy conditions because of the power in the blank. A roll cast is an easy thing with it. And catching fish with this rod gives you a lot of fun.
With turning the hardware, I tried to make something different. HMPE is a nice material which light, strong and it's recycled. It is also matching very good with Nickel Sliver.
THE WRAPS
I always use the best available quality silk. I like a simple color shade wrapping, because it is elegant and clean. No poppy colours for me.
THE INSERT
I turned the insert of a very old piece of bog oak which is between 5,000-7,500 years old.
To get this result as smooth as it is now, it got twenty layers of varnish.

YAMAME FLY RODS - A Week with Mike McFarland
Last June, Nico made the trip over from the Netherlands to Pennsylvania to spend a few days with Mike McFarland of the McFarland Rod Company. Nico wanted to get his hands dirty in the rod shop, work on a few new tapers (more on that in the next post), and spend some time fly fishing on the local trout streams. What actually happened was even better than that...
As a rod builder, I like to know every detail of a blank. From the beginning to the end. So it was time to pay Mike a visit for a week this past summer. A great inspiring and above of all instructive time during which we also developed a new blank together.
The development was an intensive process of prototypes, testing, and casting. But we really created, in my opinion, the perfect blank.
During my stay at Mike's, we were surprised by a visit from Zeb of Snowman Custom Rod Works and his girlfriend Brittany. This of course meant more talking about fly rods and casting.
Luckily there was also some time to fish on the beautiful Little Juanita river and to catch some trout.
All together it was a crazy and educational week and one to remember."

THE FLY FISHING SHOW
The Fly Fishing Show is back this winter and the first show is just a couple
of weeks away. For many, this is a way to beat cabin fever and take in a
few days of presentations, check out gear, and be around angler friends.
It's been a few years since I've been and plan on being at the Atlanta show on
Friday if I can fit it in. If you're planning on being there, let me
know with an
email.
Visit The Fly Fishing Show website for the schedule and other information.

Western Birch Retro Fly Golf Tees Back in Stock & January Giveaway
Last spring I asked Western Birch to create a custom batch of hardwood golf tees with the Retro Fly logo on the tee cup and striped in Comrade colors of red, yellow, and black. I was kind of blown away how great they looked when they arrived and it didn't take too long before that batch of 100 boxes were gone. With my son's golf season just around the corner I placed another order, this time in stained bamboo.
The Western Birch Retro Fly tees are posted in the T.F.M. Shop and everyone who places an order through the month of January will be entered to win one of two Tippet and Tales X T.F.M. giveaway packages to include a Retro Fly patched pull string tee bag that I'll fill with several boxes of tees, Comrade striped putting alignment sticks, and a T.F.M. golf marker. There will be two winners in this giveaway.
Every box ordered is another chance to win so maybe consider ordering one than one box...
The Western Birch Retro Fly tees are priced at $20 for a single box shipped and $10 for each additional box of tees ordered. I realize that the price for one box of tees seems expensive but shipping, packaging, and T.F.M. swag eats half that price tag quickly. Each package will include a stash of T.F.M. decals. International shipping is available for an additional fee.
To place an order, please send an email to thefiberglassmanifesto@gmail.com. I can take PayPal, Venmo, or a check for payment.
Winners of the Tippet and Tales X T.F.M. giveaway will be chosen by random number generator and announced on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.
A special thanks to Brad at Tippets and Tales for working with me on this giveaway. You should check out his website and follow along with him on Instagram.
P.S. If you're wondering why there's golf swag on what is otherwise a fly fishing website, it's explained a bit in this T.F.M. post.
