The Marsh Wear Anthem

Here's a quick two-minute film from the Marsh Wear crew which is a good reminder that they are making some great apparel for outdoor pursuits of all sorts.  I tend to be wearing more and more of their line up and have been nothing but impressed.

Visit the Marsh Wear website to check out their latest collection and give a look to The Tide Log as they are always telling stellar stories there.

LAST CALL - Tippet and Tales Golf Giveaway

I've mentioned it several times on T.F.M. over the month but this is the last call to get your order in for a box (or several) of the Western Birch Retro Fly Golf Tees and with each order your name will be put in the hat for one of several giveaways of custom golf gear from my buddy Brad at Tippet and Tales

The two prize packages include a Retro Fly patched pull string tee bag, a pair of Comrade striped putting alignment sticks, and a T.F.M. themed golf marker.  Both pull string tee bags will include a couple additional boxes of Retro Fly tees in them too.

You can read more about the stained bamboo Retro Fly golf tees and giveaway in this T.F.M. post from earlier in the month.  In short, these are great looking and performing golf tees that I bet will make your game at least look better...

To place an order, send me an email at thefiberglassmanifesto@gmail.com.

I'll drop the next batch of parcels in the mail early next week and will pick the two random winners of the Tippet and Tales giveaway on Wednesday, February 1st.

BLUE LINE CO. - Project Isuzu - The Shakedown

Maybe it's my affinity for our 2004 Honda Element with over 300,000 miles on it but 'Project Isuzu' from the boys from Blue Line Co. really resonates with me.  I'll be following along with this series for sure.

Check out the Blue Line Co. website and be sure to follow along on Instagram and YouTube.

SKWALA - Show Season & Road Tripping

Guess what?  The folks at SKWALA will be popping up at three of the upcoming The Fly Fishing Show weekends (Edison, Atlanta, and Denver) and look for them to show up at your favorite fly shop at Precision Fly + Tackle, Mossy Creek Fly Fishing, and The Fly Box.  Think hang.  Thank deals.  Think meet and greet.  Think maybe a free fly shop beer too.

Check out the SKWALA website to check out their gear, more on the road trip dates, and follow along on Instagram as well for the latest updates.

6 Good Reads

Here's a six-pack of articles that are all worth a read that cover the bases from resolutions to fly rods to far flung places to thoughtful prose.  Enjoy...

Tom Sadler with an extra credit article in which the word "fiberglass" would have been a good fit too.

What have you been reading lately?

THE CRAFT - The Feather Mechanic

There is no doubt that Gordon van der Spuy is quite a character but I also think he's genius when it comes to fly tying.  The latest episode of The Craft is a wonderful highlight of him, his story, and the small mouth yellowish of the Bokong river in Southern Africa.

Subscribe to future episodes of The Craft on YouTube and follow Gordon van der Spuy on Instagram.

NATIVE FISH COALITION - Annual Epic Fly Rod Raffle

For several years now, the Native Fish Coalition, with the support of Epic Fly Rods and Midcurrent, have offered a raffle fundraiser.  This time around, tickets are available for an Epic Studio Built 8' 5-weight that has a retail value of over $1,100.

If it needs any endorsement, I have an Epic 8' 5-weight and it's one of my favorites.  Progressive in taper and can do everything from trout streams to bass creeks.

There are only 100 tickets available and they are $20 each or three for $50.  Purchase your raffle tickets online and they will continue to be offered until all tickets have been sold.

Since we last talked about NFC, they have continue to plant chapters and now have 15 state chapters from Maine to Georgia.  Their focus on native fish stretches from brookies to bass and I continue to be impressed with the growing length of their reach.  Look for chapters in the Great Lakes area next...

Visit the Native Fish Coalition website to learn more about their movement and support their work with a raffle ticket or three.

6 Cool Things

Maybe it's the winter doldrums (it's been raining here much more than usual) or crafty marketing from the algorithm gods, but a few things have popped up on my radar that I think are pretty cool and figured that I'd put them all together for a quickie T.F.M. post.

These are all small shop companies that you can feel good about supporting and a few you'll see again on upcoming T.F.M. gear reviews.

I've known Jay Talbot for years now and longtime readers might remember the piece of carp art that he surprised me with way too long ago after a trip to the PNW for #carpcon.  More recently, Jay's Blackbeard Redfish design is really a lot of fun and I am taking this cap with me to Louisiana this week.

CLING FISHING PRODUCTS - MAG GRAB SERIES
Sponsored ads do work and Cling Fishing Products popped up on my Instagram feed the other day.  I have all three of their Mag Grab Series models to demo and review which you'll see soon on T.F.M.  These are Made in Montana and Jared May, owner of Cling Fishing Products, has a lot of innovative juices flowing in Bozeman.

The Mag Grab Delta is attached to my pack that I'll have with me this week in Louisiana and looking forward to loading it up with flies and lures to see how it does.  The magnetic is REALLY strong and I like the layout for flies and tools to attach.  Bonus points for the bottle opener too.

YAKODA SUPPLY - GUIDE LACES
I have a thing about good socks, shoes, and shoe laces and the Guide Laces, which are Made in the U.S.A. and available in two lengths in a handful of colors, just make sense.  $10 a set seems like cheap insurance.

I've had a few pieces of gear from Artisan Angler over the years but their reinvented Fly Trap XLT and the introduction of the Magnifly have me looking at them again.  I'm 48 years old now and the Magnifly is seeming more and more like something I should keep in my kit.  Dammit.

This is another Made in U.S.A. offering in a handful of color options and a way to create some "pop" on your fly reel spool.  300 yards likely can be stretched onto several smaller line weight fly reels or a couple saltwater fly reels.

FETCH-A-FLY
This is a new company that I recently came across on Instagram but I like the idea.  I've been in the tree enough to know that this would come in handy.  Veteran owned and available through eBay.

Okay, that's it for this go around.  Is there something cool that you've seen that should be shared?  Send me an email or slide into those DM's...

LOON OUTDOORS - Different Fish Different Places - Chapter 2

Smallmouth in the South?  I'm in.  The next series chapter from Loon Outdoors has been around for a bit now and needed to be shared.  Also, keep your eye on the boys at Blue Line Co.  They have some cool things that they are doing and more in the works.

Check out Loon Outdoors for your tying and tools needs.  I am really impressed with their 2023 line up to include the Trout Plier and Apex tools line up. More on those coming up soon.

YAMAME FLY RODS - The Making of the 'The Lightning'

The other day we talked about Nico Vreugdenhil of Yamame Fly Rods and his trip to visit Mike McFarland of McFarland Rod Company this past summer for a week that ultimately brought around the creation of his latest offering, 'The Lightning'.  You should read that T.F.M. post if you haven't already.

The Lightning is a 7'7" 4-weight, rolled in E-Glass and described as a "progressive and quick taper".

Read that last sentence again as typically the words "E-Glass" and "Quick" are not used together but Mike is a magician and I've seen him do this before.

Nico wrote...  "A progressive and quick taper in E-Glass, 'The Lightning' is very light in the hand.  It's accurate and smooth casting.  It does his job also in windy conditions because of the power in the blank. A roll cast is an easy thing with it.  And catching fish with this rod gives you a lot of fun.

This rod is something to be very proud of. The rod is available in white, black and on request in green, tobacco or yellow."

Here is some background on Nico's making of this special fly rod.

THE HARDWARE
With turning the hardware, I tried to make something different.  HMPE is a nice material which light, strong and it's recycled. It is also matching very good with Nickel Sliver.

THE WRAPS
I always use the best available quality silk.  I like a simple color shade wrapping, because it is elegant and clean. No poppy colours for me.

THE INSERT
I turned the insert of a very old piece of bog oak which is between 5,000-7,500 years old.

To get this result as smooth as it is now, it got twenty layers of varnish.

THE FLY ROD SOCK
I am making all the rod socks myself and the truth is in the details.

YAMAME FLY RODS - A Week with Mike McFarland

I am going to start this post off with an apology to Nico Vreugdenhil of Yamame Fly Rods as he's been way too patient waiting on this post and a second post that will go up this week.  Sometimes life (work, living with two teenagers, work, etc.) gets in the way of T.F.M.

Last June, Nico made the trip over from the Netherlands to Pennsylvania to spend a few days with Mike McFarland of the McFarland Rod Company.  Nico wanted to get his hands dirty in the rod shop, work on a few new tapers (more on that in the next post), and spend some time fly fishing on the local trout streams.  What actually happened was even better than that...

Nico wrote...  "Mike McFarland and I have known each other for many years. To me, Mike is one of the best blank builders in the world.  A true wizard at designing blanks.  I am proud that he has been building the blanks for Yamame Fly Rods for many years and I have been his distributor for McFarland Rods in Europe for two years now.

As a rod builder, I like to know every detail of a blank.  From the beginning to the end.  So it was time to pay Mike a visit for a week this past summer.  A great inspiring and above of all instructive time during which we also developed a new blank together.

The development was an intensive process of prototypes, testing, and casting.  But we really created, in my opinion, the perfect blank.

During my stay at Mike's, we were surprised by a visit from Zeb of Snowman Custom Rod Works and his girlfriend Brittany.  This of course meant more talking about fly rods and casting.

Luckily there was also some time to fish on the beautiful Little Juanita river and to catch some trout.

All together it was a crazy and educational week and one to remember."

Take a few minutes to visit the Yamame Fly Rods website and be sure to follow along on Facebook and Instagram for the latest shop news.

STREAMERS INC.

The other day, SKWALA broke down their list of the Eight Greatest Fly Fishing Films Ever Made and this one made the list.  As it should.  I still remember being at the Orvis Down the Hatch Film Festival in Missoula years ago when this film debuted and it brought the house down.

scumliner, can you please pick up the video camera again?  Dive down a rabbit hole on Vimeo

And, this is a reminder that I need to plan a visit to #craiglandia real soon too...

THE FLY FISHING SHOW

The Fly Fishing Show is back this winter and the first show is just a couple of weeks away.  For many, this is a way to beat cabin fever and take in a few days of presentations, check out gear, and be around angler friends.

It's been a few years since I've been and plan on being at the Atlanta show on Friday if I can fit it in.  If you're planning on being there, let me know with an email.

Western Birch Retro Fly Golf Tees Back in Stock & January Giveaway

UPDATE - Winners were chosen for this giveaway on February 5, 2023, and Matt Seare and Keith Antell were chosen.  I had an extra Retro Fly patched pull string tee bag and Matt Bennett was the winner.  Congratulations.  Your prizes are in the mail.

Last spring I asked Western Birch to create a custom batch of hardwood golf tees with the Retro Fly logo on the tee cup and striped in Comrade colors of red, yellow, and black.  I was kind of blown away how great they looked when they arrived and it didn't take too long before that batch of 100 boxes were gone.  With my son's golf season just around the corner I placed another order, this time in stained bamboo.

Since getting deeper into golf a couple of years ago, Brad Eaton from Tippets and Tales has been a mentor of sorts along with being handy when it comes to creating custom golf accessories in his garage shop.  When I placed the recent order with Western Birch, I asked Brad if we could collaborate on a giveaway and he sewed up two Retro Fly patched pull string tee bags, pairs of Comrade striped putting alignment sticks, and a couple of T.F.M. themed golf markers.

The Western Birch Retro Fly tees are posted in the T.F.M. Shop and everyone who places an order through the month of January will be entered to win one of two Tippet and Tales X T.F.M. giveaway packages to include a Retro Fly patched pull string tee bag that I'll fill with several boxes of tees, Comrade striped putting alignment sticks, and a T.F.M. golf marker.  There will be two winners in this giveaway.

Every box ordered is another chance to win so maybe consider ordering one than one box...

The Western Birch Retro Fly tees are priced at $20 for a single box shipped and $10 for each additional box of tees ordered.  I realize that the price for one box of tees seems expensive but shipping, packaging, and T.F.M. swag eats half that price tag quickly.  Each package will include a stash of T.F.M. decals.  International shipping is available for an additional fee.

To place an order, please send an email to thefiberglassmanifesto@gmail.com.  I can take PayPal, Venmo, or a check for payment.

Winners of the Tippet and Tales X T.F.M. giveaway will be chosen by random number generator and announced on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.

A special thanks to Brad at Tippets and Tales for working with me on this giveaway.  You should check out his website and follow along with him on Instagram.

P.S.  If you're wondering why there's golf swag on what is otherwise a fly fishing website, it's explained a bit in this T.F.M. post.

PATAGONIA - A River's Own Name

For whatever reason this has been sitting in the draft folder for a bit but seems kinda of perfect for today.  Press PLAY but also take a few minutes to visit the Patagonia website for the entire "A River's Own Name" experience.

Check out more from Cameron Keller Scott on his website.

TOM'S TIPS - What are the Basic Tools I Need for Fly Fishing?

If you are just getting into fly fishing it can kind of be gear overload.  Tom Rosenbauer of Orvis takes two minutes to break down the basic tools you really need.  Hint, it's not that many.

See more on the Orvis YouTube channel and check out the latest gear on the Orvis website.
