I never really knew how unpredictable and different silk wraps can look before and after varnishing until recently. Add to this equation the color of the blank which the silk is wrapped around and it can be quite a surprise what the final results end up looking like.
Shane from Graywolf Rods has wrapped his fly rod builds almost exclusively in silk for years now and even he's not quite sure how a certain color combination will look on a blank until varnish is applied. He provided photographs of a couple recent fiberglass builds to show how different the "BEFORE" and "AFTER" can really be.
