6 Cool Things To Read

This week has been a blur and the weekend is gearing up to be a busy one as well.  I'll be off to Charleston this afternoon for F3T and Iron Fly.  Are you going to be there?

Here's your sixer of fly fishing goodness from around the internet this week.

BIG SKY JOURNAL - YC ON FLY FISHING'S FUTURE
Mr. Patagonia speaks the truth and if you read nothing else in this post, read this one.

CARP ON THE FLY - KILLING IT (ALREADY)
I think John Montana is a glass geek in the making...or he's still trying to break has Superfine Glass five weight and CFO fly reel on brute carp.  Whatever.  It's fun to watch.

ORVIS - FLY FISHING IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN
Having fun it what it's all about, eh?  Kip gets us all back on track with this post.

SOFT HACKLES, TIGHT LINES - GET IN MY FLY BOX
If soft hackles don't have a place in your fly box then you're missing out.  Many solid patterns on this website and they are all relatively easy to tie.  Grab that partridge saddle and start tying.

TIPPET AND TALES - ONE ON ONE WITH ZEB
The Snowman drops some knowledge on building on glass, where he got his nickname, and there are some great photographs of his rod work in this interview.

THE INTERNATIONAL HOBBYIST - GLASS AND MORE
Expat, chicken farmer, and glass geek.  Always lots of solid content here.

Enjoy your weekend.  Cheers...

Yep. YC has it right. Maybe he's just preaching to the choir, however. Lord knows I'm sick of dudes in buffs, fast, tip flex rods, "gear" worship and grip n grins. Basically, everything you see in any fly fishing magazine or on any fly fishing website.

It's fishing for godsake. Since he's still fresh on your blog, I'll quote Injuin: "Let's have fun and meet a nice fish."

I think "fly fishing is a dying sport" might be the silliest thing to ever come out of YC's mouth! I think it was a dying sport 20 years ago when I found it, populated by old guys covered in Orvis and dripping arrogance, we're still recovering from that image, it's the young crowd that have saved it...and to joshua above, yeah, I agree, Buffs are lame but skin cancer is cool!

I see the young "covered in Orvis and dripping arrogance" more than the old timers... Perhaps it is a dying sport. YC knows more about the fishing industry than I do. I do believe that it's not the extreme sport it is sometimes made out to be, it's a deeper connection to the ruggedness of the earth. People seem to forget this. Maybe it doesn't matter. After all I'm just some kid.

YC is right all the way.
Fly Fishing IS a dying sport. Our local FF club with 90 members, there isn't a single youngster to be seen.

And yes, we are 'told' that we need more gear, fastest fly rods, etc. Does this really matter out on the water? I'm on the water to enjoy the companionship, scenery and the solitude.
