Scenes From The Louisiana Marsh - Un

The conversations about the Louisiana marsh began last summer while on Beaver Island with Captain Kevin Morlock and Captain Steve Martinez of Indigo Guide Service.  It makes sense that summertime flats guides from Michigan would want to escape another Michigan winter for bull redfish and black drum in the marsh.  They had spent part of last winter down there and were already looking forward to starting off their guide year down there for a few weeks.

I had them pencil me in for some dates and really didn't think too much about the trip again until December when I realized that I needed to make sure all four spots were filled, lodging squared away and all the logistics that go into hosting a trip anywhere.  A few phone calls, emails and text messages firmed up the group going and we all ended up in Theriot, Louisiana last Sunday to begin four days fly fishing, with some spin fishing too to prospect water that a fly couldn't touch as easily.

As with any flats trip, weather is in large part a determining factor and we were met Monday morning with a large band of thunderstorms painted across the radars on our mobile phones.  We ended up starting after lunch when the storms passed and found smaller redfish, spotted seatrout and black drum in several of the sheltered nearby canals.  Not exactly what we were looking for but still a good afternoon to get out on the water.

The next day the weather improved and we were able to get out on the marsh looking for bull redfish and large black drum.  I caught a nice black drum on the fly and missed opportunities at several large redfish.  The marsh is teaming with life with dolphins feeding, birds everywhere and even a glimpse of a large shark moving across the flat near our boat.  The marsh is alive.

Though the remainder of their Louisiana marsh dates are locked up for this year, if you're interested in Beaver Island carp and smallmouth or a trip for steelhead on the Pere Marquette, now is the time to lock in dates with Indigo Guide Service.  Visit their website for more information.

DF... This is a post Harris Solitude but nonetheless a great fly reel. I have a Size 4 and a couple Size 5 and their performance has always been flawless.
