A Few (Damn) Pickerel

Even though I had a mid-morning staff meeting over Zoom from the back porch, I pushed the kayak out into the family pond for a quickie session just before sun up.  It cooled down overnight but the wind hadn't kicked up yet.  A thick fog sat over the pond and the surrounding trees were alive with birds of all sorts singing and flitting tree to tree.

In twenty years of fishing the family pond, it's always kinda finicky, especially so in early spring.  I had hoped to bump into a bass or two but instead found pickerel.  Three were on the small side and one that was quite a bit larger.  I would have considered keeping the large on for a meal but he wiggled away after I removed the fly from his jaw.  Oh well.

These scaled down killers are as fierce as their larger cousins and I always wonder what kind of havoc they are doing to the overall health of this pond.

Over two hours, the sun passed over the trees burning off the fog.  It's going to be in the 70's again today and if it doesn't get too windy this evening, I might sneak down here again later on.  I'm bound to find where the bass are hiding at some point.
