Through all this coronavirus mess, we have tried to hold together, with safety precautions in mind, the family things that we typically do each summer. This meant that our children spent several weeks in Michigan with my parents and their cousins and we usually do some sort of road trip sometime during those weeks to favorite places up north for a few days too.
This summer we decided to extend our road trip to a full week and visit places that we hadn't been to before. Where we usually stick around northern Michigan and don't venture over the bridge, we kept on driving north, and then pointed west, until we pulled into Marquette.
To say this small city on Lake Superior blew our minds is an understatement and I don't think we even scratched the surface of its awesomeness. There's no way that I'm not giving up some secret handshake intel, but I now get why several have told me that it's their favorite city in Michigan.
The first thing that we noticed while driving in on US 41 was the numerous roadside beach access points to Lake Superior and we were further impressed by what seemed to be city park after city park within Marquette as well. The highlight was certainly Presque Isle Park and it was also impressive to find skate and BMX parks as well. Parks were everywhere and we could tell that year-around recreation opportunities are a focal point here.
Our plan was to spend one night and the next day in Marquette but we extended our stay a second night to have two full days to explore and enjoy the area. Most of that time was spent in Presque Isle Park hiking, finding a "secret" rock beach, Sunset Point until dark, eating fish and chips and pasties, local brews, the kids making high jumps into the lake at Black Rocks and swims in Lake Superior. We tried to do it all and had absolutely perfect weather (if anything, a little hotter than we expected) which helped make these days great as well. With first light before 5:00 a.m. and last light well after 10:30 p.m., there was a lot of time to play and explore.

So, we'll definitely be back to visit Marquette and we're wondering what we missed? Next time around, we'd likely try to find an Airbnb or end of the road cabin instead of a hotel on the outskirts of town and I'd sure like to figure out what fly fishing opportunities are in the area too. We'll bring or rent bicycles next time too as there were trails everywhere and kayaks and stand up boards would be on the list as well.
