Some time ago, Tom Brodhead of 406 Fly Lines tipped me off that he was working on a fiberglass fly rod project to create the perfect spring creek glass fly rod. He was looking for a longer 3-weight that would excel on some of his favorite local spring creeks. Once a prototype was ready, Tom sent it along to mess around with for a bit before sending it back his way.
While I don't have trout filled spring creeks out my back door, I could quickly see where this would be the ultimate tool for someone who spends time on waters were a long light line trout weight fly rod would be preferred. This is a wonderful progressive S-Glass taper and just a gorgeous build.
I'm glad to see the 406 Spring Creek Rod go live as finished builds and also available blanks. It's also neat to see that W. Jude Fly Rod Company involved too. Bill Hickey's rod work is always so good.
From the 406 Fly Lines website...
"A limited run of a very special fly rod. An 8'9" 3-weight glass rod with a progressive build the "Spring Creek" can handle a delicate cast of a size #20 dry fly or a #12 streamer with equal ease.
Constructed of unsanded Unidirectional S-Glass for a delicate presentation and built with a more powerful butt. It comes with an Arguello milky white agate stripping guide and a highly figured black and white Ebony reel seat. The hardware and wood insert are by R. Little and have a dark nickel finish. Clear wraps show off the nude blank very nicely. Comes with a sage green aluminum rod tube with solid brass fittings top and bottom. Also included is a rod tube sock to save the tube from the inevitable scratches and road rash. The design on the rod tube sock is exclusive to us and reflects the wonders and wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone region.
The 406 "Spring Creek" rod has a "Made in Montana" blank and finished by Bill Hickey from the W. Jude Rod Co. We have been working on the taper design for over a year now and after several prototypes the rod is now available. This is a proprietary taper and design and not available anywhere else. Blanks are available at this time.
Shipping is included and comes with 406 Fly Lines DT3 which is the line we used to design the rod."
