ORVIS - New Superfine Glass Pre-Order & C.F.O. Fly Reel Giveaway

Last summer, on my way home from the annual Beaver Island trip, I took a bit of a sidetrack over to Vermont to meet up with the folks at Orvis for a few days of fly fishing, took an extended rod shop tour, and to discuss with the Director of Product Design and Development Shawn Combs and his team the next generation of the Superfine Glass.  We had a good time and I have a few photographs from the trip that I still need to share.  We discussed possible tapers changes to make this series better, what the new fly rods would look like, and the possibility of making them easier to travel with four-piece instead of three-piece fly rods.

The planning, tweaking, and changes made to the next generation of the Superfine Glass fly rods are done and in early June the first orders will be delivered to your local fly shop.  T.F.M. readers get first dibs on pre-orders for the next couple of weeks with a twist where one customer will receive a new C.F.O. III fly reel with their order along with some T.F.M. swag.

Here's what to know about the new generation of the Superfine Glass...

  • S-2 fiberglass has again been used in this series
  • All models have had some taper improvement
  • The 2-weight is a three piece and all other models will be four-piece
  • The 2-5-weight fly rods feature a wooden reel seat insert
  • The 6 and 8-weight fly rods feature a black aluminum reel seat insert
  • All models are a dark matte olive blank with a lighter olive "quick rod identifer" section
  • The fly rods are housed in a nylon covered rod tube with a fabric rod sock sock
  • All models priced at $498 with a 25-Year Guarantee
I have the entire set from 2-weight to 8-weight (with an extra 4-weight tossed in that we'll giveaway soon) and I couldn't be more pleased with how these turned out.  I like the new aesthetics, the fly rods cast wonderfully, and I can't wait to spend a lot more time with them this year.

How does fly rods cast and feel?  The taper is progressive and while not the fastest in feel out there in fiberglass, these are definitely do-all fly rods that can handle dry flies to streamers to topwater flies without any issues at all.  They also like a wide range of fly lines which makes the entire series very handy for doing a lot of things very well on the water.

I took the new Superfine Glass 8-weight with me to the Louisiana marsh recently and I could not have been more impressed.  The Superfine Glass 8-weight was already a contender as my favorite glass fly rod in this line weight and it handled full-size redfish with relative ease.  I matched the outfit with a Mirage LT fly reel and Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Redfish Cold fly line.

Here's how the Superfine Glass pre-orders through The Fiberglass Manifesto will work...
